Our Founder: Beverly Bronson (1947–2018)
Beverly Bronson was a British-born humanitarian whose adventurous life led her from England to New York City and, ultimately, to Nepal. Before founding House with Heart, Beverly built a rich career in the arts and publishing, working in magazine editing, theater, and later running a beloved antique shop in Manhattan’s East Village. In 1999, she first traveled to Nepal, where she worked as a volunteer social worker with children in orphanages. The experience opened her eyes to the depth of poverty and the severe inequities that shape daily life there, especially the hardships faced by Nepali girls and women.
In 2001, Beverly founded House with Heart in Kathmandu after meeting two abandoned young brothers, Krishna, age five, and Babu, age two. The boys became the first members of what would grow into a thriving family home. For more than fifteen years, Beverly divided her time between New York City and Kathmandu, expanding the organization’s reach and deepening its impact. Under her leadership, House with Heart grew from a small home for children into a vibrant community center providing a learning program for young children, tutoring for adolescents, vocational training for women, and humanitarian aid for vulnerable, local communities.
Beverly passed away on Mother’s Day in 2018 after a battle with cancer. Since her passing, Mother’s Day has become a special day of remembrance and celebration at the House, honoring “Beverly Mummy” and her lifework.
Today at House with Heart, Beverly’s vision of hope, opportunity, and dignity for Nepali children, women, and families continues to guide and inspire all that we do.
