Children’s Education

Education is the most powerful safeguard we can offer children facing poverty and barriers to opportunity.

Across the Kathmandu Valley, children face steep barriers to learning. Even when tuition is free, the cost of uniforms and supplies can be prohibitive for poor families. There is significant pressure on students to leave school early in order to earn an income to help support their households. Girls are especially at risk of dropping out because of societal norms that prioritize the education of boys over girls. This results in lifelong negative consequences for young women, including a loss of independence, economic insecurity, and vulnerability to exploitation.

House with Heart responds by prioritizing education for the girls in our family residence and, separately, offering the following educational programs to children in the surrounding Kathmandu community who face significant barriers to learning:

Rise Above
Rise Above is a tutoring initiative that changes the educational trajectory of Nepali girls facing significant barriers to learning. Through after-school instruction and mentoring, Rise Above strengthens core academic skills, builds confidence, and helps girls remain in school through key exam years. For many students, House with Heart’s support continues beyond the initial tutoring year through help with school fees, supplies, exam costs, additional tutoring, and, when possible, higher education or vocational training. This sustained support gives girls a stronger foundation for future independence and opportunity.

Children’s Learning Center
Located on our Kathmandu property, the Children’s Learning Center is a day program for local preschool children from families facing extreme economic hardship. Here, children learn, play, and grow in a safe environment under the care of trained staff, while receiving nutritious meals that support healthy development.

Educational Support & Sponsorships
House with Heart provides targeted financial assistance to cover school fees, uniforms, books, and exam costs for select students in the Kathmandu community, from early schooling through university. This support helps ensure that vulnerable students are not forced to abandon their education due to financial constraints.

By reducing both financial and structural barriers, House with Heart helps children remain in school, complete their studies, and build a foundation for economic independence and opportunity.
